It&#039;s a lot of red tape and forms and waiting, so just be prepared to have to endure that for a while until they make a decision on your claim.  I would suggest calling the Social Security office on a day that they are least busy - such as a Thursday.  Do not get anxious because of the long wait on the phone, try to have something to read or draw or whatever to keep you calm while you are waiting for a rep to answer your call.  Ask the rep what the procedure would be for applying for SSI or Social Security Disability.  You will need to write everything down, so have a pencil and paper handy.  If you need to have them repeat something, go ahead and ask them to repeat.  If you happen to get someone who is not helpful, ask to speak to a supervisor.  But try to stay calm and just take it one step at a time.</description>
